Camp ovens in Australia: the whole guide

This is the hub. Every camp oven guide on the site hangs off this page, in the order a first-time buyer actually needs them: what a camp oven is, which one to buy, what size, then how to look after it and what to cook.

Start with the size question

Two numbers decide most of your first purchase, and both are misunderstood constantly.

Size Capacity Empty weight Who it suits
4.5 quart4.3 L4.8 kgTwo people, or a second small pot
9 quart8.5 L8.9 kgA family of four. The usual first buy
12 quart11.4 Labout 15 kgBig leftovers, teenagers, visitors

Those quarts are US quarts, about 0.946 litres each — which is why the litres look smaller than a conversion at 1.13 litres suggests. The size guide explains it properly, including why American “6 quart” advice does not match Australian shelves.

Why some links are greyed out: we publish a guide when it is actually finished and checked, not to fill a menu. The greyed lines are what we are working on next.

How we decide what to tell you

We read Australian retailer listings and Australian cooking sources, and we say which one a number came from and when we read it. If we could not open a page, we do not quote it. If we have not cooked something, we do not pretend we have — that is the whole reason some pages here have no photo yet.

More on that in about this site, and on how we would ever make money from it in disclosure.
